[Though the weapons are slim pickings on this goddamned ship, Trevor still manages to find a few items that might be of use and can be blessed. He heads over to the chapel after relieving the communal wardrobe of a few shoelaces. This, coupled with a glass of water, should do in a pinch.
He pokes his head inside, looking around for the one called Father John. Trevor doesn't like priests in general but this one was strangely helpful and he's not going to question why too hard: he likes his privacy, same as anyone else.]
[ Even if he's not performing Mass, John still visits the chapel daily to read through what would be the day's liturgy and meditate on it, and that's what he's up to when Trevor finds him. ]
[ He'd been anticipating the horns of this particular dilemma, but that doesn't make it any more fun. ]
I don't mind. But, uh ... I hope that—I hope you understand what you're in for, if you decide to pursue your—to continue to pursue your vocation, so to speak.
[ He starts to make the sign of the Cross, then pauses. ]
Just—for what it's worth? I know that holy water will harm some—will harm
vampires. And I know you may not agree, but I think everyone here deserves
a chance and I—I can't really countenance your hurting anyone. I'm going
to, to bless this water? But I'm not going to be thrilled if I hear of
anyone getting hurt. Regardless of who they are.
[ A small flash of a smile, but he's quite serious, and it shows.
]
What can I say, I'm a forgiving sort of guy.
[ With a very, very vested interest in this subject. ]
[It's been ages since Trevor was in a church, and even longer where he wasn't finding and fighting demons in them.
Or escaping from priests.
So he's a little unprepared for how boring it is. He's not Catholic - he's Eastern Orthodox if he's anything - and his eyelids lower a little as he does his best to take a light cat nap in the middle.
[ John notices Trevor zoning out, of course. He really could have cut the rite in half, but he's letting a little spite out to play and stretching it all out a bit more than is strictly necessary. Finally: ]
Let this water call to mind our Baptism into Christ, who has redeemed us by his death and resurrection.
[ Here's where the celebrant is supposed to sprinkle those present with the freshly blessed water. And he does. Enthusiastically. Wakey wakey, friend. ]
[Honestly he's just happy he can take a nap for two seconds without worrying about teeth biting into him. Trevor blinks when water is flicked into his face, and reaches for a weapon automatically. It's not there. He comes into full awakening, squinting at John]
I don't think you're supposed to do that to the excommunicated. But thanks.
You know, shockingly, I don't like priests at the best of times and you've sort of caught me on a day where I'm dead, so I think every day past that is generally...bad?
[ John has encountered hostility all his life. It doesn't ruffle
him. And he does genuinely feel sympathy for Trevor's situation—which,
after all, is one that he shares. He smiles a little, kindly, and nods.
]
You're welcome. Good luck.
[ And, he thinks, if you hurt Nadja I am—I am ... absolutely going
to sic someone on you. ]
The door will open on its own and, well, even if the vampire fiction genre didn't take off in his world, one cannot ignore the pure gothic quality to the interior of Dracula's room. For one, it's massive: two floors, with books along all the sides and a central area of open air. Off on one side, there's a fireplace and a large chair and a lounge. To the other there is a work area, where Dracula is seated at the moment.
John enters cautiously, looking around with increasing admiration. There's
something about the aesthetic that appeals to him on an instinctual level;
something of the cloister library, perhaps. When he sees Dracula, his
expression sobers, and he makes his way across the room with his hands in
his cardigan pockets.
Oh—Kirei, hello. I was—I wanted to talk to you anyway.
I'm all right. I mean, for certain values of "all right".
Obviously I owe Dorian no end of apologies, but I wanted to apologize to
you as well for making such a—such a disaster of things. In the chapel, of
all places.
You don't have to apologize to me. [Adamant.] The chapel is my responsibility, so if something happens there, it's my fault. So I owe you an apology as well.
[Because he's been enjoying your disgrace. And feels bad. Or rather knows he should feel bad.]
Xie Lian has—I'm to stay out of the chapel for a while, until things cool
down. So I won't be doing Mass or daily devotions. I—I don't object. It
seemed only fair.
Ah, that was one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. I agree that it's a good idea for you to stay out of the chapel. I can do Mass and daily devotions in the meantime, but I don't want you to feel unable to practice your faith. I think that would be cruel. Would you like me to come by and bring you Holy Communion on Sunday?
Let's break this in with a Spam - Chapel post, shall we?
